Alboran Hills is the ideal area for sightseeing around the south of the Costa Del Sol with the best of both coast and mountains.
5 mins drive (or a 20-30 minute walk along the beach, a little longer in 90 degree heat) from the apartment will take you to La Duquesa - a stunning Marina with plenty of cafes, restaurants and beach bars. Fishing off the rocks is recommended and boat hire is available.
A 5-minute walk to beach, there are blue seas and Chiringuito beach bars. The Sunday Pilchard BBQ on the beach (high season) is highly recommended as are the jugs of sangria and local wines! The BBQ is alight at lunchtime (not all year round) so get in early! Although I’ve just been to the one at the beach at the bottom of the hill from the apartment, all the Chiringuitos light their fires on Sunday afternoons and you can walk along to take your pick.
A short drive into the hills will bring you to the beautiful and Spanish village of Manilva and the white hill side houses of Casares and Gaucin.
30 minutes drive along the coast road is Puerta Banus where you can enjoy browsing the boutiques and watching the rich and famous in their yachts.
Drive for 50 mins further over the winding mountain roads and you will arrive at Ronda, the wow factor Spanish bullfighting town with its amazing Gorge! Beautiful views!
Sabinillas which is a 5 min drive boasts a fantastic food market and supermarket as well as many beachfront cafes and restaurants. Most people speak English here (if you don’t speak Spanish).
There are many Hypermarkets and Supermarkets in the area and even Lidl is a 5min drive from the apartment. Sabinellas which is a 5 min drive boasts a fantastic food market, Estepona street market is well worth a visit to shop or people watch from the cafe.
Estepona street market is well worth a visit to shop or people watch from the café - the fish and fruit/vegetable covered market gets a huge mention in guide books - however, this is a very small building with about a dozen outlets inside – not as huge as it’s made out to be and a little of an anti-climax!
Local activities
Swimming, tennis, walking, sailing, cycling, fishing, horses and polo, horse riding and of course golf.
Restaurants
I'm still working on putting this together and will be collecting information left at the apartment from each rental season. Please add information and testimonials on any you can recommend? I can highly recommend the Chirinquito at Castillo – fabulous freshly cooked seafood and crisp salad. As someone who doesn’t eat fish very often, I haven’t yet tried their meat dishes as the fish is so good and we always return with each trip!
Sabinillas - Great coffee in all the places we've tried along the seafront promenade - I haven’t yet eaten meals in any of them so can’t say which are best, but there are loads to choose from! Have left a card for great coffee and cake place in the top draw!
